On February 7, according to official news, Bithumb released a follow-up announcement on the "Bitcoin airdrop" incident. The platform stated that during the distribution of event rewards yesterday, due to an error in entering the amount of Bitcoin, some customers were airdropped a large amount of Bitcoin.
Through its internal abnormal transaction control system, Bithumb restricted transactions and withdrawals for 695 customers within 35 minutes of the erroneous payment. Over 99% of the erroneous payment amount has been recovered, minimizing customer losses through swift action. The remaining unrecovered assets are still being processed. Details are as follows:
• Number of erroneous transfers: 620,000 BTC (2.95% of total BTC)
• Amount recovered: 618,212 BTC (approximately 99.7% of the total)
• 93% of the 1,788 BTC equivalent assets (Korean Won and other virtual assets) that were already sold have been recovered.
(It has been confirmed that the Bitcoin transferred in the error did not go to any external address.)
BlockBeats previously reported that Bithumb employees mistakenly distributed 2,000 BTC instead of the intended 2,000 won airdrop, causing hundreds of users to unexpectedly receive the unexpected reward. As a result, the price of Bitcoin on the Bithumb platform dropped by as much as 10% compared to other markets.
