Ledger, the leading cryptocurrency hardware wallet provider, has just introduced Ledger Recovery Key – an offline private key recovery tool that allows users to regain wallet access without using cloud services or sharing personal data.
According to the announcement, Recovery Key is a physical tool that helps Ledger Flex or Stax wallet users store private keys on an NFC-connected smart card. Unlike the previous Ledger Recover – which stored encrypted recovery code segments in a secure cloud system – Recovery Key is always stored offline and protected by a personal PIN, enhancing security.
This product does not require identity verification or personal information collection like Ledger Recover. Users only need to tap the card on the device and enter the PIN to recover access to digital assets.
Recovery Key only supports NFC-connected wallets like Ledger Flex and Stax, connecting directly to Ledger devices through a secure NFC channel without intermediaries. This tool is built on Secure Element technology, the core security layer also used in Ledger's hardware wallets.
The project stated that the Recovery Key application code has been open-sourced on GitHub, along with technical documentation (whitepaper) as part of the company's transparency commitment. The tool has undergone internal testing by the Donjon security team and been independently audited by cybersecurity company Synacktiv.
"We have received very positive feedback from security experts and industry leaders, and are eager to officially launch this product to continue receiving feedback from the community," said Ledger's CTO, Charles Guillemet.
